Canada Officially Petitioned to Welcome Snowden’s Guardian Angels As Refugees
HONG KONG, March 9, 2017 — Three Canadian lawyers and acting directors of the not-for-profit organization For the Refugees have petitioned the Canadian government to welcome as refugees the asylum seeking families, or “guardian angels”, who sheltered Edward Snowden in Hong Kong.
Attorneys Marc-André Séguin, Francis Tourigny, and Legal Logik attorney Michael Simkin, who are representing the three families in their Canadian immigration proceedings, made the announcement at a press conference at the Hong Kong Foreign Correspondents’ Club on March 9 at 1 pm Hong Kong time, joined by Edward Snowden’s attorney, Barrister-at-law and Montreal native Robert Tibbo.
“We are encouraged by the Trudeau government’s clear stance on welcoming refugees and its role in leading the international community,” says For The Refugees board member and Legal Logik attorney Michael Simkin. “It’s our hope that Prime Minister Trudeau will recognize that these families are increasingly at risk and that he will hear their call for asylum in Canada.”
Edward Snowden’s “guardian angels” made international headlines in 2016 with the release of Oliver Stone’s film “Snowden”, which included a scene that alerted the international community to their existence. Since then, their situation has become even more dire. These families, including three young children, are unable to work and get by. They face persecution in Hong Kong – a jurisdiction known for being tough on asylum-seekers – and in their home countries, for having housed American whistleblower Edward Snowden.
Edward Snowden has stated that although these families “have nothing, they risked everything to do what is right.” Now, For the Refugees is hoping Canada will also do what is right in helping these brave individuals by granting them asylum in Canada.
